Il comune di Trasquera

The history of Trasquera

The history of Trasquera is closely linked to the development of the Alpine region and the historical connections between Italy and Switzerland.

ANCIENT HISTORY AND MIDDLE AGES: The Trasquera region was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as archaeological findings suggest. During the Middle Ages, the area was part of the Holy Roman Empire and was subject to various local rulers. Due to its location in the Alps, Trasquera was an important transit point for travellers and traders using the passes between Italy and Switzerland.

MODERN TIMES: At the beginning of the modern period, Trasquera, like many other Alpine communities, was strongly characterized by agriculture and livestock farming. The remoteness and difficult living conditions led many inhabitants to emigrate, especially to Switzerland and France, to find work.

19TH AND 20TH CENTURY: With the opening of the Simplon railway in 1906, which connected Italy and Switzerland through the Simplon tunnel, the region experienced a significant economic boom. Trasquera benefited from this new transport link, which increased trade and tourism. The construction of the railway line also brought jobs and investment to the region.

During the two world wars, Trasquera remained relatively unscathed from direct acts of war, but suffered the general economic and social impact.

CURRENT EVENTS: Today Trasquera is a small but lively municipality that lives mainly from tourism. The scenic beauty of the region, the proximity to ski resorts and the well-preserved Alpine culture attract visitors. The municipality cherishes its traditions and is proud of its history and heritage. Today Trasquera offers an insight into the history and culture of the Alpine region, characterized by the close ties and historical interactions between Italy and Switzerland.
